The Isle of Skye is the largest island in the Inner Hebrides with
over 300 miles of coastline, rolling moorland, the Alpine crags of
the Black Cuillins and the more gentle Red Cuillins. It also has and
some of the biggest landslip features in Britain on the Storr and Quiraing
of the Trotternish Ridge. These diverse environments offer the possibilities
of seeing a variety of wildlife - otters, seals and eagles or a chance
to learn or brush up on map and compass skills.
This holiday is designed
for anyone who wishes to explore this varied landscape in the company
of a qualified International Mountain Leader/ Bushcraft Instructor
who also has a special interest in the natural history of the island.
Base yourself in Portree, which is in easy reach of local shops and
amenities, and day trips will allow the fit hill walker the chance
to sample a variety of mountain, moorland and coastal walks. The week’s
walking will include such areas as the Quiraing on the Trotternish
Ridge, the Red Cuillin Hills and an easy section of the Black Cuillin
mountains, the Macleod's Tables and various coastal walks. However,
Skye contains such a wealth of day walks that other alternatives can
be offered depending on participants’ experience,
fitness and interests. The week is ideal for anyone new to outdoor
walking as there is no use of ropes or climbing involved. Obviously
the weather also plays a part, but whatever the conditions a suitable
alternative will be offered.
Most courses start on a Sunday and finish
on a Friday, to give five days walking and a rest day somewhere mid-week.
